In the fall of 2002, practioners, individuals with spinal cord injury, and advocacy groups met and established the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Kentucky (SCIAK). The mission of SCIAK is to serve those affected by spinal cord injury through increased awareness, greater resource availability and support services, enhanced educational and preventative interventions, as well as increased athletic and recreational opportunities. In addition, to practioners, individuals with spinal cord injury and corporate sponsors, three organizations in Kentucky were instrumental in the formation of SCIAK, i.e., the Derby City Chapter of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, Friends for Michael Spinal Cord Injury Organization and Kentucky Wheelchair Athletics Association.
Life with a purpose is a purpose for life. Living with a disability can create many day-to-day challenges, often leaving some individuals wondering about their purpose in life. Together, with the help of a service dog, reaching those dreams of achievement can become a reality - giving them a new purpose for life. These highly trained dogs not only help to give individuals the ability to be more independent, and break down social barriers, they often give their partners back what's most important - their dignity. Together, we can fulfill old dreams and create new dreams for the future, giving lives what we all need, a "purpose."
