» 2005 United States Quad Rugby National Tournament

LOUISVILLE, KY: Jewish Hospital Frazier Rehab Institute is pleased to present, as host and organizer for the second year in a row, the United States Quad Rugby Association (USQRA) 2005 National Tournament. After successfully hosting two smaller Quad Rugby tournaments in 2003 and the national tournament in 2004, Frazier Rehab’s organizational efforts were acknowledged by the USQRA Executive Board, giving Frazier the opportunity to host the national tournament in Louisville, KY.

The national tournaments are a two-tier tournament, with the top two teams from each of the four sections of the United States competing in Division I, and the third and fourth place finishers competing in Division II. Teams from around the United States who have been confirmed to play in the National Tournament at this time include:

 Fines for illegally parking in a handicapped space in Kentucky rose to $250 in July, but you might not know it by reviewing court records for the law's first six months. 

According to a report prepared for The Courier-Journal by the Administrative Office of the Courts, there were 206 cases in 25 counties of someone being charged with illegal parking in a handicapped zone in Kentucky between the time the law took effect July 13 and Jan. 31.
» Michelle Bazeley Crowned Ms. Wheelchair Kentucky 2005

 In November , Michelle Bazeley was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Kentucky, 2005. Michelle was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, and moved to Louisville five years ago after graduating from the University of Cincinnati.

Currently she works full time for Community Employment, an agency that provides job services for adults with disabilities, and part time at Actors Theatre of Louisville. She also heads up the Louisville chapter of Winners On Wheels (WOW), a national scouting organization for kids with physical disabilities.

 HARKIN INTRODUCES BILL TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES

Legislation would allow individuals to receive care in their own homes and communities, rather than nursing homes

Washington, D.C. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that he introduced the Money Follows the Person Act of 2005. The legislation, co-sponsored by Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR), would reimburse states for community based services for an individual currently living in a nursing home or similar facility.

About Friends For Michael, Inc.

Friends For Michael, Inc. Spinal Cord Injury Organization was founded in 1997 when eighteen-year-old Michael Brent, a bright student and talented athlete was injured in an automobile accident.  He was on his way home from PGA's Valhalla Golf Course where he had been working as a caddy, when he blacked out and ran off I-71 in Oldham County .  When he woke up he realized he was paralyzed.  Life changed rapidly for the young man who was just eighteen days away from leaving for college where he had earned an academic and golf scholarship.  Michael had sustained a C-3/C-4 spinal cord injury that left him a quadriplegic.

» Paralysis Research Act Passes U.S. Senate

The Research Review Act, which will promote collaborative paralysis research, passed the U.S. Senate in a late night session Tuesday, November 16th, 2004. The Act incorporates a vital component of the pending Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act which calls on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to prepare a report on how they have and how they will encourage the use of multidisciplinary research teams to advance treatments, develop new therapies, and collaborate on clinical trials with respect to spinal cord injury and paralysis research.

Introduced with bipartisan support by Congressional sponsors, Michael Bilirakis (R-Fla.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) H.R. 5213 passed the House on Oct. 7 and the Senate on Nov. 16 unanimously. The act defines key goals of the scientific community - encouraging collaboration and coordination and limiting research redundancy.

The US/Japan Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Disability Exchange Program is funded by The New York Community Trust DeWitt Wallace/Youth Travel Enrichment Fund, established in Community Funds by the co-founder of The Reader's Digest Association. For the past ten years, MIUSA has received the generous support of the DeWitt Wallace/Youth Travel Enrichment Fund, established by the founder of The Reader's Digest Association, to provide an educational travel opportunity to young adults with disabilities from diverse communities. In previous years, these programs have taken place in Mexico, Costa Rica, Japan and England.

» Info Needed On Accessibility And Safety Of Bus Stops

 Nelson Nygaard Consulting Associates under contract with Easter Seals Project ACTION is assembling a toolkit for bus stop accessibility and safety assessment.  The toolkit will be available to transit and public works agencies, as well as disability advocates, providing methods on evaluating bus stop accessibility and designing accessible stops.  The toolkit will address a broad range of issues, including usage by people with a variety of disabilities, optimal bus stop design and bus stop environments.
» Local Group Publishes Fundraiser Cookbook

The Derby City Area Spinal Cord Injury Organization has collected the best recipes from group members, family, and friends and compiled them into an attractive keepsake cookbook.

They will begin selling their one-of-a-kind cookbooks on August 26, 2004 for only $10 each. They may be purchased from any member of the organization or visit www.derbycityspinalcord.org.

The cookbook contains 200+ well-loved recipes including appetizers, main dishes, desserts and many others. Recipes include the contributor's name, enabling you to find the recipes of family and friends. The recipes are not complicated you will probably have the ingredients already. Some extra features include a Nutrition guide, fat facts, safety guidelines, and suggestions for lowering fat content in your diet, guidelines to losing weight, and much, much more! You can find it all inside this great cookbook.
